This is a variant of biodegradable plastic derived from microalgae that live in seawater. Microalgae grown in seawater do not require arable land and do not consume freshwater, unlike bioplastics produced from corn, sugarcane, beets, and other crops.
The natural plastic content in a microalgal cell is higher, proportion-wise, than in any other biomass source, which means significantly less waste in production. The growth rate and renewability of microalgae are far superior to any land-based culture containing natural polymers.
Extracting plastic from microalgal biomass is easier, requires fewer processing steps, and is less energy-intensive.
PHB bioplastic derived from microalgae is non-toxic and safe for humans.
